Data protection can lower the chance of cyber-attacks which can negatively impact your company and your reputation. It is important to know and follow the most effective practices when it comes to protecting sensitive information. A breach of private information could result in lawsuits or fines that may have long-term consequences for your company or yourself.

Password protect all devices and files – This simple measure can deter hackers from accessing your information. Use passwords that are complex and combine numbers, letters, and symbols. Change vendor-supplied default passwords to stronger ones as soon as possible. Make sure you are using the most up-to-date antivirus software and regularly run a full security scan of your PC and servers.

Don’t send confidential or personally identifiable information via email. This includes Social Security numbers, bank account information, passwords, etc. Email is not secure and may be intercepted by unfriendly parties.

Secure your network and data Use strong encryption to protect your laptops, computers, and portable storage devices. This will help you send information to third-party organizations securely and also protect the information stored on the devices. It’s also important to have a plan of responding to a cyberattack, including who to notify and how to respond (e.g., employees, customers, credit agencies).

Ensure you have a backup of all your data Keep offline copies of the most important data in separate locations from where your primary copies are stored. This will stop attackers from gaining unauthorized access to your primary copy, or dataroom index from the deletion of it.
