There are a few tricks you can employ to ensure that your meeting goes smoothly and efficiently, whether it’s in person in your boardroom, or a meeting remotely from your couch.
Being punctual, preparing and starting at the right time are excellent ways to get things started. Make sure the board members have everything they need prior to meeting. A well-written, clear agenda and its distribution before the meeting date can help keep the meeting on track.
Avoid wasting time on lengthy reports. They can quickly drown out the board’s discussion. Discuss committee and leadership reports only if you are required to make decisions or supervise the board. The rest of the reports can be dealt with by email or in smaller meetings.
Limit discussions about features and roadmaps for product -The direction of a company should not be influenced by what the CEO thinks the market would like. If you must speak about product, focus on why you are taking certain directions. This will help you stay on track and prevent the “Enron” effect, where the board was unable to see that issues were getting worse underneath the surface.
Keep candor breaks on the agenda. These brief silences allow board members to raise concerns they feel uncomfortable discussing before their peers. They are usually necessary to ensure that all opinions are heard and that everyone is comfortable expressing themselves.
